Dear Representative _____________, As your constituent, I am writing to ask you to co-sponsor H.R. 1245, Johannas Law: The Gynecologic Cancer Education and Awareness Act. Introduced by Representatives Rosa DeLauro(D-CN), Darrell Issa (R-CA), Kay Granger (R-TX) and Sander Levin (D-MI), Johannas Law has been endorsed by national organizations representing over 300,000 physicians, nurses, and cancer survivors. Named after the sister of a friend who lost her life to ovarian cancer, Johannas Law will create a federal campaign of education regarding gynecologic cancers designed to improve early detection and save lives. Gynecologic cancers are projected to kill 28,000 women in the U.S. this year. Theyve killed over 120,000 American women in the last 5 years alone! Johannas Law is needed because most women do not know the risk factors and symptoms of gynecologic cancers. These symptoms, which can include persistent abdominal bloating, heartburn and constipation, are often confused with those of common gastrointestinal illnesses, menopause or perimenopause. The lack of knowledge about symptoms contributes to delays in diagnosis and treatment for thousands of women in the U.S. each year. These delays often prove deadly. When diagnosed in the earliest stage, gynecologic cancers have 5-year survival rates greater than 90 percent. When detected in later stages, survival rates are far lower. Johannas Law can help eliminate the information gap that has contributed to the suffering and deaths of so many mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, and friends. By doing so, it will help women experiencing symptoms seek appropriate medical attention sooner. Dont let the deadly status quo that has existed for decades persist. Spare more American families needless suffering and tragedy. Please join over 240 of your colleagues in the House already co-sponsoring this long overdue legislation. Honor the memories of the hundreds of thousands of women lost and the courage of those still struggling to survive by co-sponsoring Johannas Law. We must educate Americas 100+ million women at risk and the millions more to come. For more information or to co-sponsor, please contact either:
